Job Description

The Mathematics Instructor is responsible for delivering classroom instruction that equips students with the mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills required for success in skilled trades and technical careers. The instructor teaches practical mathematics concepts using real-world applications related to construction, manufacturing, welding, pipe fitting, masonry, drywall, framing, and other trade disciplines offered by PTTI.

The instructor creates an engaging learning environment that builds students' confidence in mathematics while emphasizing accuracy, critical thinking, and workplace application.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging classroom instruction in applied mathematics using trade-specific examples and practical, hands-on learning activities.
  • Teach mathematical concepts including basic arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, algebra, geometry, measurements, conversions, and problem-solving techniques applicable to the skilled trades.
  • Instruct students in reading and using rulers, tape measures, scales, blueprints, and construction drawings, including calculations involving dimensions, area, perimeter, volume, angles, and material estimates.
  • Integrate mathematics into trade-related applications including carpentry, drywall, framing, welding, masonry, concrete, manufacturing, sprinkler fitting, and pipe fitting to reinforce workplace relevance.
  • Evaluate student progress through quizzes, exams, classroom assignments, practical exercises, and participation while maintaining accurate attendance and grade records.
  • Provide individualized instruction, tutoring, and academic support to students with varying mathematical skill levels to promote student success and program completion.
  • Maintain an organized, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student engagement, professionalism, teamwork, and accountability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent education and relevant industry experience may be considered.
  • Previous teaching, tutoring, workforce development, or adult education experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of applied mathematics used in construction, manufacturing, welding, and other skilled trades.
  • Ability to explain mathematical concepts using practical, hands-on demonstrations and real-world examples.
  • Excellent classroom management, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to motivate and support adult learners from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout classroom and laboratory environments.
  • Ability to demonstrate the use of measuring tools, rulers, tape measures, calculators, and instructional equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally lift instructional materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
