Military life can be challenging for children as they move from duty station to duty station. One or both parents can be deployed for extended periods, creating an ever-changing family dynamic in many households. Children often feel isolated in new or even old surroundings. They may experience feelings of self-doubt or suffer from low self-esteem. This can lead to behavior problems, placing their academic engagement and performance in jeopardy.
Operation Hero is an intervention program designed to put these children back on track. School personnel and/or the child’s parents refer the child to the program. When children enroll in Operation Hero, they work within a team to navigate the 10-week course. The Operation Hero facilitator leads the children in group discussions about who they are and how they fit in at home and school.
They discuss how to manage feelings, friendships, and conflict. The sessions also include a period of homework assistance in areas identified by their classroom teacher, snack time, and an activity supporting the theme of the week.
