Position Summary

The Secondary English Language Arts (ELA)/History Teacher provides rigorous, engaging instruction in English Language Arts and Social Studies courses for middle and/or high school students. The teacher fosters literacy, critical thinking, historical inquiry, civic responsibility, and effective communication while creating a culturally responsive learning environment that reflects the values and traditions of the Hydaburg community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver standards-based instruction aligned with Alaska State Standards in English Language Arts and History/Social Studies.
  • Teach courses that may include English, Language Arts, Alaska History, U.S. History, World History, Government, Economics, and other assigned subjects.
  • Develop lessons that strengthen reading comprehension, writing, speaking, listening, research, and analytical thinking skills.
  • Facilitate discussions and activities that encourage civic engagement and an understanding of diverse perspectives.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying abilities and learning styles.
  • Utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, grades, and student performance data.
  • Integrate technology and instructional resources to enhance student learning.
  • Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment that promotes respect, responsibility, and academic excellence.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, special education staff, counselors, and intervention personnel to support student achievement.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Supervise students during assigned duties and extracurricular activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • Valid Alaska Type A Teaching Certificate or ability to obtain Alaska certification.
  • Endorsement in English Language Arts, Social Studies, or a related field preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; master's degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of effective literacy and social studies instructional practices.
  • Experience working in rural schools or culturally diverse communities preferred.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, families, and community members.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Alaska academic standards and assessment practices.
  • Ability to analyze student data to improve instruction.
  • Ability to create engaging learning experiences that promote critical thinking and inquiry.
  • Understanding of culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Commitment to continuous professional growth and reflective practice.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and move throughout the classroom for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift instructional materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to supervise students in indoor and outdoor settings.
Terms of Employment
  • Salary and benefits in accordance with the negotiated teacher agreement and district salary schedule.
  • Work year and duty days are established by the Hydaburg City School District.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required background checks and district hiring requirements.
