Job Description

JOB PURPOSE:

The Community Educator will support the Yupiit School District in leading educational projects for students. The position covers opportunities where local or traditional knowledge are needed, such as, but not limited to, fishing, cutting fish, gathering wood, wood work, picking berries, engine building, or telling a traditional story. Projects may be scheduled in the school during class time (for instance, to make akutaq with little ones) or outside of the school (such as going with a group of students to fish camp).

Community Educators will be hired part time based on their skills.

Community Educators will work closely with school staff and the Yugtun Education Director to determine what projects they will participate as part of summer school, when the project will take place, and how many hours the project will take. The maximum number of hours for a project is 8 hours a day.

Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Must pass a background check. Must show up for work on-time.
  • Follow and abide by all district rules and safety precautions when working with children.
  • School Staff and the Yugtun Education Director will identify projects and set the terms for community educator will participation, when the project will take place, and how many hours the project will take.
  • Work with the ANE Grant director to get projects approved.
  • Carefully track hours worked, students who participated, and activities done.

  • Strong desire to share Yup’ik traditional skills and (Required)

  • Willingness to safely take groups of students on activities in the
  • Ability to work well without direct supervision as well as in a team
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain good relationships with a variety of di?erent

The employee will be engaged in outdoor project-based learning required to stand; walk, and reach with hands and arms, carry, lift, and engage in aerobic activity. This position may require loading, unloading, and riding on a boat. This position requires the individual to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and to interact with the public and other workers.
