Job Overview

Successful candidates will be appointed as an Alaska State Trooper Recruit or Alaska State Trooper, depending on qualifications. They will receive high‑caliber training at no expense, earning wages and benefits while attending the academy.

Responsibilities

Troopers work in a wide variety of law‑enforcement fields. They may specialize in rural law enforcement, highway patrol, near‑urban patrol, or serious criminal investigations. Troopers provide complete law‑enforcement services for areas outside city limits, often in remote locations. They serve primarily as rural police officers, guiding and protecting Alaska’s communities and natural resources.

Training Post and Academy Location

Trooper recruits will be stationed at one of three training posts—Fairbanks, Palmer/Wasilla, or Soldotna—after completion of their academy. The DPS Training Academy is located in Sitka, Alaska.

Mission & Culture

The mission of the Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers is to preserve the peace, enforce the law, prevent and detect crime, protect life and property, and preserve Alaska’s resources. Troopers reflect a commitment to public safety for Alaskans.

Minimum Qualifications
  • English speaking and reading proficiency.
  • 21 years of age or older at the start of the academy.
  • High‑school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Current valid driver’s license.
  • No disqualifying record on a background investigation within the last 12 months.
