Unalaska is a unique and diverse community with many opportunities. Unalaska Fire Dept. was established in 1974 and staffed by volunteer members of the community. Today that is still true, the majority of the staffing is provided by members of our community from all different backgrounds. Unalaska Fire has 5 full-time staff and a rolling contingent of approximately 25 volunteers.
Unalaska Fire is looking for motivated individuals to step up and serve their community. Unalaska Fire is an all hazards department and the first and last line of defense against disaster in Unalaska. Hours of WorkVolunteer firefighters do not adhere to a set schedule of working hours. Training for all department staff is held every Thursday from 6pm to 9pm and some Saturdays. Volunteers are required to attend most of these trainings to maintain their high level of knowledge and skill. This allows our volunteers to function efficiently and remain safe while functioning as a firefighter or EMS responder according to state law, protocols, and standard operating procedures.
RepresentativeDuties and Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, responds to calls for emergency medical service, rescue, fire or fire related emergencies to protect life, property and environment;
- Carry out the full range of exterior zone fire ground tasks, supports tasks and functions in the interior zone;
- Participates in fire safety inspections, fire prevention activities, station and equipment maintenance activities, and continual training activities;
- And to do other work as related. Unalaska Fire adheres to NFPA 1500 and 472 guidelines for interior trained firefighters.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have an Alaska driver’s license in good standing.
Previous experience as a Fire or EMS responder are desirable but not necessary; the department will provide all necessary Fire and EMS training required for performing on the emergency scene. Volunteers in this position are subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing as required by the Department of Transportation.
WageThe position is paid a stipend per event or call attended and ranges from $15-$50 based upon skill, certifications, or past experience.
