Position Overview

The Behavioral Health Aide (BHA) is a village-based counselor who provides quality behavioral health services to youth, adults, and families. This role delivers individual, family, and group support while promoting community wellness through outreach, education, and prevention activities. The BHA collaborates closely with clinical teams and village partners to ensure coordinated, culturally responsive care for patients across the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Upholds KANA's Code of Ethics by conducting all professional activities with honesty, integrity, fairness, and respect
  • Builds therapeutic relationships with clients based on empathy, trust, and professional boundaries
  • Provides individual, family, and group counseling services for children, adolescents, adults, and elders within scope of training and certification
  • May conduct substance use disorder assessments and facilitate treatment groups, based on certification level and experience
  • Works under the direction of the Behavioral Health Clinical Director and participates in regular clinical supervision
  • Collaborates with the Behavioral Health team, including Case Managers and Intake staff, to ensure coordinated care and service delivery
  • Supports village-based care by assisting other Behavioral Health Aides or taking on additional caseloads as needed
  • Participates in Village Response Teams (VRT) to assist with crisis response and intervention efforts
  • Plans and supports community-based prevention activities, including alcohol- and drug-free events, health fairs, and recovery programs
  • Provides community health education through presentations, classes, and outreach in schools and community settings
  • Offers informal behavioral health support to community members through engagement at events, home visits, and outreach activities
  • Completes required reports, activity logs, and documentation in accordance with grant, contract, and regulatory requirements
  • Maintains timely and accurate clinical documentation in compliance with KANA, State of Alaska, Medicaid, and other healthcare regulations
  • Assists with administrative support in the village clinic, including patient communication, appointment reminders, and addressing barriers to care
  • Attends required staff meetings, clinical supervision sessions, and training programs
  • Progresses through the Behavioral Health Aide certification program by completing required coursework, practicum hours, and training milestones
  • Participates in outcome-informed practices, including Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM), and incorporates feedback into clinical care
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and six months of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity with behavioral health services, community health, or human services preferred
  • Knowledge of basic counseling techniques, documentation standards, and healthcare confidentiality practices (HIPAA) preferred
Work Schedule

KANA's standard work schedule is 37.5 working hours per week, typically consisting of 7.5 paid working hours per day plus a one-hour unpaid lunch break (total of 8.5 hours on site per day).
