Purpose of This Document This job description has been approved by the Tribal Administrator to define the duties, reporting relationships, and expectations of the Health and Wellness Coordinator. Personnel management functions such as hiring, discipline, grievances, and benefits of administration remain under the authority of the Human Resources Department.

Position Overview The Health and Wellness Coordinator oversee daily program operations and coordinates events that support community health and wellness initiatives. This position promotes culturally appropriate strategies for the prevention of heart disease and type 2 diabetes by providing education, encouragement, and support to community members. The Coordinator works to increase awareness and understanding of personal health and wellness and encourages the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors, including regular physical activity, nutritious food choices, good oral health practices, breastfeeding awareness, and commercial tobacco-free living.

Through outreach, education, and community engagement, the Coordinator helps individuals and families make informed decisions that reduce chronic disease risk and improve overall health and well-being.

Key Responsibilities Coordinate and oversee daily health and wellness program activities.

Plan, organize, and facilitate health promotion events and educational programs.

Promote chronic disease prevention strategies, particularly for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Provide culturally relevant health education and wellness resources.

Encourage healthy behaviors, including physical activity, nutrition, oral health, breastfeeding awareness, and tobacco-free living.

Build and maintain relationships with community members, partners, and stakeholders.

Track program activities and assist with reporting and evaluation efforts.

Partner with other Tribe departments to support health and wellness activities and other collaborative initiatives as appropriate and applicable.

Participate in cooperative agreement Community of Practice and coalition calls as needed.

Qualifications Education Associate's degree in public health, Health Administration, Social Work, or a related field preferred.

The Tribe recognizes that valuable knowledge may be gained through cultural practice, traditional learning, community service, lived experience, and professional experience. Relevant combinations may be substituted for formal educational requirements.

Experience2 years of experience in public health, community organizing, or health education, preferably working directly with Tribal or Indigenous communities.

Knowledge and Skills Required Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of important cultural considerations when working with Tribes.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Must be able to organize and manage multiple priorities.

Strong organizational, planning and project management skills with the ability to work efficiently and effectively both autonomously and in small teams.

Strong sense of teamwork and dedication to community.

Familiarity with Tribal sovereignty, community-based participatory research, and culturally informed health policies.

Work Environment Requirements Position includes community engagement, meetings, training, and travel as required.

Occasional lifting and carrying supplies up to 50 lbs.

Occasional work on weekends and/or during the evenings will be required for program events and activities.

Must pass a criminal background check.

Valid Alaska Driver's License preferred.

Unalaska-based candidates required.
