Red Dog Operations is one of the largest zinc mines in the world. This role supports the study and validation of analytical procedures in the assay laboratory. The Senior Assay Technician will perform routine analyses independently as assigned by the laboratory supervisor and may be assigned method development or method system suitability studies to be carried out independently.

Work Schedule:

2 weeks on-site, 2 weeks off-site

Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Demonstrate competency in essential functions described in the Assay Tech Trainee through Assay Tech V levels
  • Carry out independent studies under the direction of the laboratory supervisor to validate changes to analytical procedures or test new procedures to confirm accuracy and precision before laboratory-wide adoption
  • Mentor other Assayers in quality control procedures or other technical topics as assigned by the laboratory supervisor
  • Set a high standard for work ethic, work quality and team building
  • Assist in teaching an in-house training course on quality control and basic statistics to aid the career development of other Assay Techs
  • The Assay Tech may be assigned additional duties as required by analytical needs; tasks will be assigned based on workload and skill

The laboratory supervisor will assign tasks to the Assay Tech based on workload and skill set.

EMS / Environment & Safety
  • Properly dispose of laboratory waste in compliance with environmental regulations
  • Recommend laboratory procedures to reduce reagent consumption or waste
  • Train other Assay Techs in proper laboratory procedures and Environmental Management System procedures as required
Qualifications
  • Five (5) years of assay laboratory experience. A degree in chemistry fulfills this requirement. A degree in a related field with two years of experience may also meet the requirement. Preference given to applicants with a chemistry degree
  • Recent analytical experience involving titration methods; preference for potentiometric titration experience
  • Experience with at least one technique: WDXRF, AA, or MP instrumentation
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to frequently lift containers weighing five to fifty pounds and occasionally lift forty-five to seventy-pound containers of solution
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and climb several flights of stairs
  • Ability to enter data and work with computerized instruments with repetitive motion
  • Ability to handle, open and dispense from containers of concentrated acids and other potentially dangerous chemicals
  • Ability to discern from printed labels which chemicals require specific PPE or handling
  • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures for safe and accurate analyses
  • Ability to respond to safety warnings in the laboratory and perform analyses safely
  • Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously
  • Set a positive example of safe, accurate and precise analysis for laboratory staff
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and be able to work nights when required
