Position Overview

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is a multi-skilled clinical support professional responsible for ensuring efficient patient flow and high-quality care during scheduled clinics. This role supports providers and care teams through patient intake, clinical procedures, and care coordination while delivering exceptional customer service. The CMA plays a critical role in supporting patient-centered care, improving access, and enhancing the overall patient experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supports the organization’s mission, goals, quality standards, and patient-centered medical home philosophy while demonstrating KANA’s core values of Courtesy, Caring, Respect, Sharing, and Pride
  • Upholds KANA’s Code of Ethics by conducting all professional activities with integrity, fairness, and respect
  • Participates in daily team huddles and collaborates with staff to ensure effective pre-visit planning, including culturally and linguistically appropriate services
  • Prepares exam rooms and assists providers with clinical procedures and patient care activities
  • Greets, escorts, and prepares patients for examinations based on the purpose of the visit
  • Conducts intake interviews for new and returning patients, including education on patient and care team roles within the medical home model
  • Measures and records vital signs, including pulse, temperature, blood pressure, height, and weight; maintains accurate patient health histories
  • Documents patient encounters in the electronic medical record (Cerner) in real time; provides visit summaries and ensures smooth patient checkout transitions
  • Provides compassionate, patient-centered support to patients and families throughout the care process
  • Assists providers with examinations and procedures in accordance with KANA policies and standing orders; explains procedures and aftercare instructions
  • Performs clinical screening and diagnostic tests such as vision, audiometry, EKG, pulse oximetry, and peak flow measurements as directed
  • Administers medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed; monitors patient response and reports concerns to providers
  • Performs routine laboratory tests and follows clinical protocols for specimen handling and documentation
  • Communicates normal lab and diagnostic results to patients and facilitates follow-up care
  • Processes patient calls and portal communications, routes messages appropriately, and schedules appointments based on established protocols
  • Follows up with patients and families who miss important appointments and helps address barriers to care
  • Maintains clean, stocked, and safe exam rooms; disinfects surfaces and sterilizes equipment in accordance with infection control standards
  • Monitors population health screenings and patient registries within the electronic health record system
  • Assists with specialty clinics by preparing rooms and supporting visiting providers
  • Ensures compliance with all healthcare regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, AAAHC standards, and HRSA clinical measures
  • Maintains accurate, timely documentation and adheres to all clinical policies and procedures
