Summary

The Refrigeration Engineering Manager is expected to supervise and maintain optimal operation of industrial refrigeration systems and associated equipment. This entails preventative maintenance on ammonia and freon systems. They will follow, and enforce operating procedures, oversee mechanical integrity inspections, perform troubleshooting during operational shutdowns & upsets, collaborate with management and QA/QC to verify optimal temperatures. This position will supervise, lead, and train others within the Engine Room.

Expected equipment to service includes:
Control systems (Manual and Computerized), Plate Freezers, Spiral Freezers, Blast Freezers, Tunnel Freezers, Compressors, Condensers, Purgers, Pumps, RSW Chillers, Ice Machines, HCACR Freezers and Cooler units.

Essential Functions (Responsibilities)
  • Operate the refrigeration system following operating and maintenance procedures under the PSM program.
  • Perform annual testing including compressor safeties, EPCS operation, transducer calibrations, and RTD calibrations.
  • Oversee operators and assistants to maintain daily system logs and other MI inspections for the PSM program.
  • Keep records of repairs and replacements and causes of malfunctions; initiate purchase orders for parts.
  • Lead routine service, pre‑ and post‑season maintenance, and repair of the vessel refrigeration system, adjusting or replacing worn or defective parts and reassembling repaired systems.
  • Troubleshoot control systems during upsets, testing lines, components, and connections for leaks.
  • Collaborate with production and QA/QC to ensure optimal product flow through the vessel factory.
  • Observe and test system operation using gauges and instruments.
  • Perform mechanical overhauls and refrigerant reclaiming.
  • Dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components with electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment.
  • Brazes or solder parts to repair defective joints and leaks.
  • Install expansion and control valves, using acetylene torches and wrenches to connect components to an electric power source.

Minimum Requirements (Required Qualifications)
  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2 years of industrial or commercial refrigeration experience (Freon or ammonia) or completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.
  • 2 years of experience using general refrigeration competencies, including but not limited to ammonia and/or Freon systems repair.
  • EPA 608 Certification required.
Preferred Education & Experience
  • One or more years of related experience and training in seafood or related industries.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Excellent time‑management skills and ability to multi‑task while prioritizing work.
  • Ability to communicate with service technicians remotely for troubleshooting when other options are exhausted.
  • Ability to communicate with supervisors and management when there are issues with refrigeration systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical bulletins, service documents and system schematics.
