Overview

Seasonal Motor Vehicle Operator.

Location:

Gustavus, AK. Open to the public. This is a temporary, seasonal appointment in the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve Maintenance Division. Typical season is April through October and may vary due to weather, project needs, or funding. Entry on duty anticipated in April 2026.

• Operate and perform operator maintenance on motor vehicles including pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, etc.
• Load and unload vehicles using restraints such as chains, binders, etc.
• Transport passengers or cargo to destinations.
• Operate vehicles such as ATVs, snow blowers/brooms, or bobcats.

U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males. Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer participation required. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties; a valid driver’s license is required. You must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record, and, if applicable, certified driving records from all states that disclose licenses.

You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. A uniform is required with a uniform allowance provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work. Overnight travel up to 10 nights per month may be required. A government travel charge card will be issued.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Eligibility includes:

• Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park’s natural and/or cultural resources and their management; local knowledge of resources and typical conditions affecting work.

Additional competencies identified for this position include:

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Skill in manipulating controls for starting, stopping, backing, and driving vehicles in all traffic and road conditions.
• Knowledge of vehicle maintenance manuals for routine preventative maintenance (fluids, tire pressure, etc.).
• Knowledge and ability to safely use and maintain hand and power tools of various trades.

There is no education substitution for the required knowledge and expertise described above.

OPM has approved an exception to the 1039-hour time limitation for this temporary seasonal appointment, extending to 1560 hours. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions within 90 days of the issue date. This is an excepted service appointment and does not confer competitive status. Travel, housing, and relocation expenses are not paid. Alaska has no state income tax.

Physical Demands:
Moderate to heavy physical effort including lifting over 50 pounds, climbing, and working with power tools. Working conditions include outdoor exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, fumes, and potential risks from accidents or falling objects while driving or loading/unloading.
