Overview
This position is open to all Applicants. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Haines, Alaska.
ResponsibilitiesThis permanent seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 position serves as the crew leader of a 3-member crew on the Chilkoot Lake weir adult salmon stock assessment project. Primary duties include performing project and camp installation, maintenance, and removal, and identifying, handling, sampling, and enumerating adult salmon passing through the fish weir.

Workingconditions
The Chilkoot weir is within Chilkoot State Park, accessible by road about 10 miles northeast of town, on a one-mile river stretch between Lutak Inlet and Chilkoot Lake. The daily work environment is dynamic with most time spent outside on the salmon weir and nights spent on site in a dry cabin overlooking the river. The position supports bear monitoring and collaborates with State Park rangers to keep bears and crew safe.
Exposure to wild animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Ability to effectively handle firearms is required. Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding work for extended periods is required. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, dry cabins, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Valid driver’s license required.
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies:
- Experience with fieldwork, specifically working at a weir or other fish counting system.
- Experience identifying, capturing, and handling salmonids.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work and withstand inclement weather.
- Experience working and living in bear country with knowledge of wildlife safety and ability to operate firearms.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working effectively as part of a diverse team in a supervisory or leadership role.

Special notes and requirementsA valid driver's license is required. Must be able to legally carry and effectively use firearms. Current first aid and CPR training certificate. High school graduation or the equivalent.
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide with the State of Alaska; this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2. OR one year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions: An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
