Overview

This position is open to all Applicants.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Cordova, Alaska.

What you will be doing

This Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 works on the Coghill River Weir in western Prince William Sound and monitors annual escapement of salmon returning to Coghill Lake via resistance board weir. Duties include deployment, upkeep, and breakdown of a remote field camp, collecting and recording salmon sex and length data, collecting salmon scales for age determination, and maintaining project skiffs and field equipment.

This position is staffed annually from June 1 to July 31.

This position plays a critical role in collecting daily escapement numbers that area managers use to guide fishing openings and closures. Data collected by this position will be used to better provide sustainable and efficient fishing opportunities.

Benefits

This position will allow the incumbent to gain experience and a diverse skill set working with a commercial fisheries stock assessment project necessary to ensure sustainable fisheries in Prince William Sound. This position includes overtime as well as state benefits.

Working conditions

This position lives in a remote field camp at Coghill Lake accessed by float plane and works on a two person crew. The schedule will be variable and include weekends, nights, and overtime. The daily work environment is outdoors counting salmon passing through a weir, collecting sex and length data, scales from sockeye salmon, and collecting limnological data. Housing in Cordova is available in a shared bunkhouse before departure to the field and upon return.

Qualifications

Who we are looking for:

  • Experience collecting environmental and other scientific data
  • Experience deploying and operating fish weirs
  • Experience identifying fresh water and anadromous fish species indigenous to Alaska, and collecting age-sex-length data from adult salmon
  • Experience living or working in remote field camps
  • Experience operating and maintaining outboard motors and boats

Note:

A valid driver’s license is preferred. This position may involve firearms/ammunition. High school graduation or the equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with state and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
