Mission & CultureThe Southwest Area of the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection provides aggressive Wildland Fire Suppression and Support for 88 million acres in Southwest Alaska, while implementing a widespread Fuels Reduction Program to protect communities and values at risk from wildfires.
ResponsibilitiesThe role is primarily that of a Southwest Area Ramp Manager, overseeing the safety and efficiency of the McGrath Ramp. Key duties include:
- Coordinating the movement of aircraft, vehicles, equipment, and personnel on the ramp.
- Monitoring ramp operations and maintaining safety protocols.
- Communicating with pilots and airfield managers.
- Maintaining equipment readiness and training/mentoring personnel in ramp operations.
- Supporting fire suppression assignments, which may involve travel both in‑state and out‑of‑state, stand‑by notice during the fire season, and assignments requiring extended absence (14–21 days).
- At least 12 months of wildland fire‑fighting or forestry field experience, including a minimum of 6 months at the developmental level. Equivalent experience may be demonstrated by service as a Wildland Fire and Resource Technician 2 with the State of Alaska or another employer.
- Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System (National Incident Qualification System Red Card).
- Completion of at least 3 semester credits (or equivalent) in forestry, fire science, or a closely related field may substitute for the six months of general field experience. A minimum of 6 months developmental experience cannot be substituted.
- Compliance with the Work Capacity Test at the “Arduous” level (3‑mile hike carrying a 45‑pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less).
- Possession of an Alaska driver’s license (or conditional offer with subsequent acquisition).
- Availability for travel, recall, and work periods of 14–21 days from the duty station.
- Ability to fly in small fixed‑wing aircraft or helicopters and handle hazardous materials.
- For certain roles, possession of a commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.
- Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
- Competencies:
adaptability, teamwork, flexibility, computer skills, and problem‐solving.
Duty station is McGrath, Alaska— a remote community on the upper Kuskokwim River. The position offers dry housing with communal bathroom, laundry, and dining facilities for selected candidates. Access to MCGrath is by aircraft and boat; the community has a population of approximately 250 residents and limited services.
