The Hong Lab at Carnegie Mellon University investigates the neuronal circuits underlying sensory-guided behavior and decision-making. The lab is looking for a highly motivated Research Assistant to support day-to-day operations, maintain the mouse colony, assist with behavioral training of mice, and provide technical and administrative support for students and research staff.
Core Responsibilities- Train animals to perform behavioral tasks, including daily handling and training of mice and monitoring and documenting animal health.
- Perform experiments for data acquisition and analysis.
- Oversee daily operations of the animal colony, maintain transgenic lines, animal husbandry, and collect tissue samples for genotyping and PCR.
- Orient new lab members to proper animal care practices and ensure humane care according to high ethical and scientific standards.
- Maintain and order general lab reagents and supplies.
- Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience or a related field (biology, engineering, computer science) required.
- 1-3 years of experience working with animals (handling, behavioral training, or maintenance) required.
- Prior experience with, and comfort working regularly with mice.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; able to work independently within a team.
- Educational and experiential background demonstrating comparable knowledge may be considered.
- Work posture: hybrid schedule with an in-office presence 3 days a week.
- Typical work schedule:
Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.
- 5:00 p.m. - Fixed term: estimated duration of 24 months.
