This position is open to Alaska Residents only.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 3 (Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands Shellfish/Groundfish Area Management Biologist) located in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

This Fishery Biologist 3 serves as the Area Management Biologist for commercial and subsistence shellfish and groundfish fisheries in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area. This position is in Dutch Harbor and provides management and research support for a wide range of state and federally co‑managed commercial fisheries.

Under general supervision, primary responsibilities include:

• Collect, monitor, and interpret in season fishery data to coordinate fishery seasons with harvest limits for king, snow, Tanner, and Dungeness crab, Pacific cod, sablefish, weather vane scallops, and other groundfish and shellfish fisheries.
• Supervise 3 or more biologists or technical staff that focus on in-season fishery management, port sampling, and catch accounting.
• Interpret and communicate fisheries regulations to the public, fishery stakeholders, and regulatory boards.
• Serve as an appointed member of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council-BSAI Crab Plan Team.
• Serve as the administrative and budgetary lead for ADF&G infrastructure in Dutch Harbor.

The daily work environment ranges from a private office, visits to processing facilities, and potentially working and living onboard commercial or research vessels. This position will require working outside normal business hours and will include in state and out of state travel.

State provided housing is available depending on needs.

• Requires annual in state and out of state travel (1-3 trips per year) for up to 1 week at a time.

CPR/First Aid Training

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;

AND

One year of full performance professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Fish Culturist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16…
