JOB SUMMARY
The Shop Welder is responsible for performing a full range of journeyman-level structural welding and fabrication work on a variety of equipment and components. This role applies expertise in welding various metals, selecting appropriate electrodes and welding processes, and ensuring all work meets applicable quality control standards and job specifications. The Shop Welder estimates labor and material requirements for both internal and external customers and completes fabrication and repair projects with a high level of accuracy and craftsmanship.
Responsibilities include welding and fabricating components for mobile equipment and other custom or small-scale projects. Equipment serviced includes, but is not limited to, oilfield service trucks, cranes, construction equipment, and other heavy‑duty machinery.
- Follow work assignments, instructions, and priorities established by the Foreman and Quality Control (QC) Department.
- Prepare materials for welding, cutting, and fabrication in accordance with project specifications.
- Diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate repair methods based on manufacturer specifications and job requirements.
- Perform structural welding in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and quality requirements.
- Fabricate custom components and assemblies using engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, or field measurements.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, including work orders, materials used, and completed repairs.
- Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical shop equipment.
- Inspect completed work to verify compliance with quality standards and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications.
- Mentor, train, and coordinate work activities with co‑workers as assigned.
- Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection such as local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems, portable exhaust ventilation, powered air‑purifying respirators (PAPRs), half‑mask respirators, and full‑face respirators.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area while following all company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform welding and fabrication work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Demonstrate self‑motivation, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Comply with Company and customer policies and procedures.
- Support AES zero‑incident safety culture and assume personal accountability and responsibility for safe work practices in all projects, activities, and operations.
- Other duties will be assigned to this position as needed.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- A valid (U.S. issued) Driver’s License is required.
- A North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC) safety training certification is required.
- The ability to work 84 hours a week on a 3×3 rotation is required.
- At least five (5) years of journeyman‑level welding experience performing structural welding, fabrication, and repairs on mobile equipment, heavy trucks, and construction equipment, with demonstrated proficiency in standard metal welding techniques is required.
- Certifications in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) in accordance with American Welding Society D1.1 is required.
- Five (5) or more years of experience working as a Shop Welder & Fabricator specifically in the Petrochemical or Oil and Gas industry, on the North Slope, and/or in other Arctic environments is preferred.
- A valid (U.S. issued, Alaska compliant) Class B CDL is preferred.
