Alaska Marine Trucking provides local freight distribution services in Alaska, including loading, unloading, warehousing, pickup and delivery. We currently have an opening for a Freight Operations/Dock to Driver in Haines, Alaska. Alaska Marine Trucking (AMT) is hiring for its Dock to Driver Training Program, which pays for CDL training for employees who wish to obtain a Class‑A CDL. Successful candidates will be hired as Freight Handlers with the expectation that they will become Class‑A Drivers through the dock to driver training program. While working as a freight handler, employees will learn our processes and procedures both on the dock and while on delivery routes.

During the training period, candidates are expected to work through the process of acquiring a CDL with AMT and our training partners. All CDL training costs are covered by Alaska Marine Trucking.

• Safety is the first responsibility to employees and customers. This position is safety-sensitive and requires constant alertness and safe conduct.
• Inspect trucks and trailers for defects to ensure safe operating condition before, during, and after trips; complete and submit daily vehicle inspection forms.
• Check shipping papers for proper descriptions of commodities (including hazardous materials), weight, packaging, marking, labeling, and other information necessary for safe and efficient transportation of customer freight.
• Collect payment for goods delivered and for delivery charges when necessary.
• Maneuver vehicle safely and efficiently while transporting cargo in situations such as heavy traffic, inclement weather, and difficult loading or unloading facilities.
• Maintain telephone or radio contact with the dispatcher.
• Operate forklifts with a lifting capacity between 3,000 and 8,000 pounds to move freight between equipment, warehouse, and yard locations.
• Load and unload trucks/trailers, securing shipments using cargo straps, ropes, lumber, etc.; this process may involve climbing onto the deck of a flatbed, onto a flatbed load, and/or into and out of containers and trailers as needed.
• Assist in maintaining company property, including sweeping the warehouse floor, equipment, and other facilities.
• Report all safety hazards, incidents, or accidents involving cargo, vehicles, drivers, personnel, or the public.
• Maintain records required for compliance with state, federal, and corporate rules and regulations, including vehicle inspections, hazardous material manifests, and permits.

• Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a Commercial Learners Permit from the State of Alaska.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and write documents such as bills of lading, tariffs, delivery receipts, military documents, procedure manuals, employee and safety rules and manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, routine reports and correspondence.
