Job Description
NANA Construction is hiring for areliable and hardworking Deckhand to support tug and barge operations in Western Alaska. This position assists with the safe operation of company vessels, cargo handling, and general vessel maintenance during the open water season.
Deckhands work as part of a small crew responsible for towing, landing barges, and supporting marine logistics in remote Alaska communities. The position requires working outdoors in challenging weather conditions and performing physically demanding work in a marine environment.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, able to follow instructions, and willing to work as part of a team.
Responsibilities
+ Assist with vessel deck operations including line handling, towing gear, and barge landings
+ Support loading and unloading of cargo, equipment, and materials from barges
+ Handle mooring lines, rigging, and towing equipment safely
+ Perform routine vessel maintenance including chipping, painting, cleaning, greasing equipment, and general upkeep
+ Maintain a clean and organized deck and work environment
+ Assist the Captain and Mate with vessel operations as directed
+ Follow company safety policies and U.S. Coast Guard regulations
+ Participate in vessel safety drills and emergency response procedures
+ Monitor cargo and deck equipment during operations
+ Immediately report all Incidents/Accidents, no matter how small, to their Supervisor
+ Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit's success also may be assigned
+ This position has no supervisory responsibilities
Qualifications
+ High School Diploma or GED equivalent
+ Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with Ordinary Seaman (OS) rating preferred
+ Ability to work outdoors in harsh weather and marine conditions
+ Ability to live on the tug, in tight quarters.
+ Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs, handling heavy lines, and performing manual labor
+ Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to safety
+ Ability to work long hours in a team environment aboard vessels and barges
+ Ability to follow directions and maintain situational awareness around heavy equipment and moving vessels
+ Must be able to pass pre-employment drug testing and participate in the company's USCG/DOT drug testing program
+ Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy
+ Previous marine, construction, or heavy equipment experience preferred
+ Experience working in Alaska or remote locations preferred
+ Basic knowledge of knots, rigging, or marine operations preferred
