Job Overview

The purpose of this classification is to perform technical and specialized work functions associated with protection of life and property from fire, natural or manmade disasters, and other hazards and with supporting fire safety, prevention, and equipment maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Enforce all city fire codes, ordinances, and state regulations to protect life and property; comply with rules, orders, and instructions issued by superior officers.
  • Respond to emergency calls involving fires, hazardous materials, and vehicle accidents; evaluate scene, direct traffic, and control crowds.
  • Control fire situations including suppression, extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, search, rescue, salvage, and overhaul.
  • Assist with fire cause determination; preserve evidence of arson; testify in court as necessary.
  • Select, maintain, and properly operate fire service tools and equipment; maintain knowledge of rope rescue techniques.
  • Locate water sources; lay and connect hoses; act as nozzle or backup person; use chemical extinguishers; carry ladders; manage tools and equipment up and down laddersli>
  • Identify dangerous building conditions, electrical emergencies, hazardous materials, and ancillary health hazards; apply precautions and evacuate individuals; implement medical protocols.
  • Provide medical care including primary survey, bleeding control, shock treatment, CPR, AED, re‑hydration, BLS, airway management, and other treatment during fire‑ground activities.
  • Perform rescue operations: extrications from structures, trenches, machinery, or vehicles; water rescues; searches for drowning victims; fallen victim searches; high‑angle rescues with rappelling; animal rescues.
  • Operate emergency vehicles, apparatus, pumps, generators, hoses, ladder, extinguisher, SCBA, extrication tools, hydraulic tools, chain saw, cutting torch, mechanic tools, reciprocating saw, axe, gas detector, smoke ejector, ventilation fan, defibrillator, first aid supplies, radios; operate computer for data retrieval and modification; use word processing, spreadsheets, and database programs.
  • Extend hose lines, use fittings, adapters, clamps; replace burst sections; lay and connect supply hoses from water sources.
  • Maintain and wear protective clothing and SCBA.
  • Monitor and communicate effectively over radio; perform radio tests.
  • Prepare, inspect, inventory, repair, and maintain equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, turnout gear, first aid equipment, and vehicles; perform post‑fire cleanup; test equipment regularly.
  • Conduct company surveys and inspections; notify concerned parties of fire hazards; test hydrants.
  • Establish positive public relations; attend community meetings; promote fire safety; answer telephone; direct calls; respond to inquiries.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties: station tours, flag raising/ lowering, security of facilities, preparing meals, ordering supplies, laundering, cleaning, painting, and grounds maintenance.
  • Maintain current field and code manuals, policies, employee handbooks, maps, addresses, and related materials.
  • Attend meetings, seminars, drills, and training sessions to maintain knowledge of department and city operations and medical and rescue techniques.
  • Complete forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and other documents; maintain administrative records and files.
  • Cooperate with federal, state, and local law‑enforcement agencies on investigations within city jurisdiction.
Additional Functions
  • Substitute for co‑workers during temporary absences.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • No previous experience required.
  • Georgia N.P.Q. Firefighter I certification accepted.
  • Must possess a valid Georgia driver’s license.
  • During orientation, attain and maintain State of Georgia N.P.Q. Firefighter II certification.
  • During orientation, attain and maintain Hazardous Materials Technician, Heart Saver First‑Aid/CPR, and AED certification.
  • State of Georgia Certified Firefighter highly desirable.
  • All newly hired firefighters required to become Relief Apparatus Operator Engineers within 12 months following probation.
