Job SummaryThe Department of Social Work at Albany State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Professor/Associate Professor. The start date for this position is July 1, 2025. The ideal candidate for this position will serve as Department Chair and share the department's goals of educating students to excel educationally, and to advance the values and tenets of Social Work.
The candidate must also be thoroughly familiar with CSWE Board of Accreditation standards and processes. The candidate will teach two graduate courses in Social Work and devote the rest of the time towards executing the administrative responsibilities. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
As the chief administrative and academic officer of the department, the Chair has authority and responsibility for the delivery of academic programs in accordance with departmental, college, and university strategic plans; hiring and evaluation of department personnel, including faculty and staff; and budgeting and resource management. The authority is subject to approval by the Dean and Provost. As a member of the College administration, the Chair coordinates departmental activity with the activities of other units in the College and University and in collaboration with other members of the administration as well as assists in the development and implementation of College initiatives.
The responsibilities of the chairperson cover six key areas: (1) Academic Planning, (2) Personnel, (3) Students, (4) Budget, (5) Space and Equipment, and (6) General operations. The Department Chairs Are Appointed On a Rotational Basis, And Renewal Is Based Upon a Review Of The Administrator Evaluations Received By The Faculty Of The Unit, With The Recommendation Of The Dean. Each Year, The Department Chair Is Recommended To The President For Reappointment Or Non-reappointment By The Provost.
In Carrying Out Their Function, The Department Chair Is Responsible For The Following:
- Providing visionary leadership for academic programs, faculty, staff, and students that is consistent with the departmental, college, and university missions.
- External accreditation and all written reports. Leading faculty to prepare and implement the assessment plan/accreditation self-study report of the Department.
- Managing enrollment, recruitment, retention and graduation rates.
- Overseeing curriculum development and revisions for the department.
- Recruiting, mentoring, and maintaining faculty and other personnel.
- Developing and administering a departmental budget to be approved by the Dean and submitted to the Provost.
- Encouraging and monitoring the professional development of each faculty and staff member.
- Evaluating the performance of faculty members within his/her department and making recommendations to the Dean concerning promotion, tenure, dismissal, or non-reappointment.
- Providing a system of academic advising for students in the major programs of study.
- Recommending students for graduation when they have met all program requirements.
- Managing course schedules that serve program and student needs, course registrations, and instructor assignments.
- Encouraging the attendance of faculty at university-sponsored events.
- Calling and presiding over monthly meetings of the department during each academic year and maintaining copies of minutes of these meetings.
- Communicating and administering policies and procedures as adopted by the administration to faculty, staff, and students.
- Encouraging and monitoring faculty proposals for contracts and grants.
- Preparing and submitting annual Department reports and such other reports as may be required by the University.
- Reviewing current offerings and syllabi, textbooks, and other instructional materials.
- Seeing that regular office hours are kept and that administrative responsibilities are carried out.
- Serving on university committees related to academic programs and others as assigned.
- Reviewing student academic appeals and grievances.
- Protecting the confidentiality of certain data entrusted to him/her.
