Counselor Position
The Dougherty County School System is seeking a Counselor to join our roster of experienced, motivated, and effective professionals. The School Counselor will support the academic, personal/social, and career development of students in grades 9 - 12. The counselor will work closely with students, families, teachers, and administrators to foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree or above in counseling
- Three years of successful counseling experience
- Career and group counseling experience
- Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate
Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive understanding of adolescent development, counseling theories, and ethical practices
- Familiarity with school-based counseling programs aligned with ASCA (American School Counselor Association) standards
- Working knowledge of academic advising, post-secondary planning, and career development resources
- Understanding of federal, state, and local education laws, regulations, and policies
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, mental health interventions, and referral procedures
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with students, families, and school staff
- Ability to deliver counseling services individually and in group settings
- Skilled in conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and behavior management
- Proficient in using technology and student information systems (e.g. Infinite Campus, Google Suits)
- Capable of planning, implementing, and evaluating guidance curriculum and individualized support plans
- Ability to assess student needs and provide appropriate academic, social-emotional, and career guidance
- Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents, and community stakeholders
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, manage sensitive information, and adhere to ethical standards
- Ability to advocate for all students and promote an inclusive, equitable learning environment
Performance Responsibilities:
- Comprehensive School Counseling Program:
Develops and provides an effective, comprehensive guidance and counseling program to serve the needs of all students;
Provides direct support services to individual students, small groups, and classrooms;
Maintains confidentiality and accuracy of records and assists with the management of student records;
Participates in professional growth activities as directed by the Principal. - Testing and Academic Support:
Responsible for test administration (SAT, ACT, PSAT) and supervision, depending on the school level;
Assists students with immediate and long-range educational planning;
Provides ongoing academic advice and scheduling support, depending on the school level;
Participates in the creation of the Master Schedule, depending on the school level. - Student Orientation and Transition:
Provides orientation programs to acquaint students with new developments and facilitate their school adjustment process;
Assists administration with coordination, articulation, and follow-up procedures for students moving from school to school or between internal programs. - Career and College Readiness:
Provides student career options through individual and classroom presentations and community involvement;
Assists students in planning for post-secondary education and employment opportunities. - Collaboration and Consultation:
Collaborates with school personnel and parents on educational related issues, when needed;
Acts as a school-based source for parents and school staff regarding community agencies. - Student Intervention and Attendance Support:
Assists with school-based attendance and truancy interventions;
Participates as a member of the school-based Leadership Team. - Compliance and Professional Conduct:
Adheres to all applicable laws and school system procedures and policies;
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
