Job Summary:
The Dougherty County School System is seeking highly motivated and student-centered educators to join our team of teaching professionals. The 5th Grade English Language Arts Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality literacy instruction that strengthens students' reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills while fostering a love for learning. This position plays a critical role in helping students develop strong foundational literacy skills necessary for academic success and future learning.
The teacher will design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction that supports diverse learners, promotes critical thinking, and prepares students to meet or exceed grade-level expectations. The teacher will create a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom environment where students feel supported, challenged, and empowered to achieve their full potential. Collaboration with colleagues, families, and school leadership is essential to ensure student success and continuous instructional improvement.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors' degree or higher;
Valid Georgia Teacher certification or Charter Waiver eligible;
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.
Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of elementary literacy instruction, reading comprehension strategies, and writing development;
Ability to implement Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) in English Language Arts;
Effective classroom management skills that promote a positive, respectful, and productive learning environment;
Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and colleagues;
Ability to analyze student data and use it to guide instruction and interventions;
Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners;
Proficiency in integrating instructional technology and digital learning tools to enhance student engagement;
Strong organizational and time-management skills;
Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive student information;
Commitment to continuous professional growth and reflective practice.
Performance Responsibilities:
Provide standards-based instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and language aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence;
Develop and implement engaging, research-based literacy lessons that promote reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and written expression;
Utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction to support student growth;
Analyze student performance data to identify learning gaps and implement targeted instructional strategies and interventions;
Create a positive classroom culture that supports student engagement, collaboration, and academic success;
Maintain effective classroom management practices that ensure a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment;
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners and ensure equitable access to rigorous learning opportunities;
Collaborate with grade-level teams, instructional coaches, and administrators to strengthen instructional practices and improve student outcomes;
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, academic expectations, and learning supports;
Participate in professional learning opportunities, faculty meetings, and collaborative planning sessions;
Maintain accurate student records, documentation, and required reports in accordance with district policies and procedures;
Supervise students during instructional and assigned school activities to ensure student safety and well-being;
Demonstrate professionalism through consistent attendance, preparedness, and adherence to district policies and expectations;
Maintains satisfactory performance on the system Evaluation Instrument;
Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom for extended periods of time;
Ability to occasionally lift or move instructional materials and classroom supplies (up to approximately 25 pounds);
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and assist young students as needed;
Work is performed primarily in a classroom environment with moderate noise levels typical of a school setting;
Requires frequent interaction with students, staff, and families throughout the school day.

Salary Range:
Tenth-Month Contract - Competitive salary and excellent benefits package in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide.
