Overview

The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work functions associated with collecting and processing wastewater samples for laboratory analysis, field testing for temperature and pH levels and assisting with industry meter reading. Monitors and maintains sampling equipment at industrial and sewer lines, creeks, streams, ponds, landfills, grease traps, spill sites, wastewater treatment plants, etc.; programs computerized sampling equipment to draw samples at designated intervals.

Responsibilities
  • Collect wastewater samples from sewer lines, restaurants, industrial facilities, or other sites; monitor and record pH and temperature levels of wastewater samples.
  • Prepare industrial sampling data sheets to record sample source/location, time, pH, temperature, and other pertinent data.
  • Label wastewater samples with appropriate identifying data; transport samples to laboratory for testing; maintain chain of custody of collected samples.
  • Operate various machinery, equipment and tools in performance of assigned duties, which may include a utility truck, computerized sampling equipment, pH meter, digital thermometer, DO meter, shovel, pick axe, mechanic tools, and other hand/power tools.
  • Perform general repair/maintenance tasks necessary to maintain machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition such as repairing equipment, inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning work areas; monitor equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; report faulty equipment.
  • Prepare and/or complete various forms, correspondence, reports, data sheets, logs, and other documents.
  • Receive various forms, reports, chain of custody forms, maps, manuals, or other documentation; review, complete, process, forward or retain as appropriate.
  • Communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; provide information; take and relay messages; respond to requests for service and/or information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
  • Communicate with supervisor, co-workers, 911 dispatchers, utility dispatchers, customers, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Provide assistance or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; additionally, one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving wastewater operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.

    Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs.

    Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Situational Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

    Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
