Position: Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Technician

Overview

Under general supervision from the GIS Manager, performs highly technical work, developing and maintaining GIS databases and applications. Assists GIS Staff in supporting City of Albany's Enterprise GIS. Assists GIS staff in analysis of data, development of new data, distribution of GIS data and products, and editing of spatial data.

Responsibilities
  • Uses ESRI's ArcGIS tools, including coordinate geometry (COGO), to input and maintain various GIS geofiles, related database information, and other GIS tools and products.
  • Assists in developing geographic database structure, tables, forms and reports; produces maps and graphics as needed; quality-control GIS deliverables.
  • Assists with data collection, including use of GPS technology, and conversion of data to digitized format.
  • Compiles FGDC compliant metadata documentation.
  • Reviews professional/governmental publications and attends workshops as needed to maintain awareness of new developments in technology and GIS operations.
  • Operates digital camera and scanner to produce images of photographs for a variety of documents.
  • Attends and/or participates in various meetings as required.

Education and/or Experience

Associate's degree with training emphasis in geographical information system operations and computerized mapping preferred; additionally, twelve (12) months of previous experience involving geographical information system (GIS) operations, computerized mapping, drafting, database administration, and personal computer operations; experience and knowledge of ESRI/ArcGIS software is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
