Position: Code Enforcement Inspector I

Overview

The purpose of this classification is to perform property inspections, and to enforce city/county codes and ordinances governing minimum housing standards, unlawful dumping, vacant lots, and related regulations. This is the entry level code enforcement inspector position.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct on-site and off-site inspections of city and county properties and homes to ensure code compliance with ordinances governing housing standards and property maintenance; initiate inspection, notification, and removal of inoperative vehicles.
  • Receive and investigate complaints; contact violators and issue violation notices; take photographs of violations prior to court; prepare documentation for court appearance and testify in court as needed.
  • Issue citations/violation notices; contact violators; and issue summons to court.
  • Interpret regulatory codes and respond to routine requests for information from employees, officials, property owners, contractors and other individuals; make recommendations for additions/deletions to codes and regulations.
  • Process a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated time frames and per established procedures; receive and review Lot Cleaning orders, In Rem Notices, Court Orders, Fire Reports, etc.; review, complete processes, forward or retain as appropriate; prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including Production reports, time sheets, Weed Notices, Demolition Notices, Repair Notices, Violation Notices and Dilapidated Structure Reports.
  • Operate a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing the City's code enforcement software system, Excel, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operate general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Consult with supervisors, law officers, inspectors, contractors, property owners, and other agency officials to review departmental operations, discuss problems, coordinate activities, provide technical expertise, and receive advice/direction.
  • Initiate by inspection Notification of Weed Removal.
  • Review codes and ordinances; keep abreast of applicable city and state laws and regulations.
  • Perform property tax research as needed.
  • Operate a motor vehicle in the performance of duties.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; additionally, two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving code enforcement of premises' violations, zoning violation enforcement, and/or related field required or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification must be attained within 12 months of hire.
