Role Overview

The purpose of this classification is to provide services throughout the processing of crime scenes for the Police Department. Duties and responsibilities include operating a mobile crime scene laboratory, collecting and processing physical evidence, photographing crime scenes, lifting, processing, classifying, and identifying fingerprints, testifying in court, compiling reports, and maintaining and updating records for proper documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate a mobile crime scene laboratory.
  • Collect and process physical evidence.
  • Photograph crime scenes.
  • Lift, process, classify, and identify fingerprints.
  • Testify in court.
  • Compile reports and maintain proper documentation.
  • Work with law enforcement to identify, isolate, and secure crime scenes.
  • Work with law enforcement to establish a restricted perimeter around a crime scene so evidence is not compromised.
  • Work with law enforcement to define a clear set of restrictions regarding nonessential personnel and investigative personnel.
  • Preserve, collect, and record impressions, including toolmarks, footprints, tire marks, bite marks, and fingerprints.
  • Collect DNA evidence, including blood, semen, hair, skin, blood stain patterns, bodily fluids, and nails.
  • Collect trace evidence, including gunshot residue, fibers, accelerant, paint, glass, etc.
  • Collect firearms evidence, including weapons, spent casings, bullet fragments, cartridges, and gun powder patterns.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications
  • One year certificate from college or technical school in Criminal Justice or Forensic Science; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
