The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform manual work functions associated with producing and finishing concrete areas and assisting with various Public Works projects. Preparation involves setting up forms, measuring and marking, leveling, and removing debris. Operators monitor pours concrete, level it, shape surfaces, and create expansion joints. Finished surfaces are textured, patched, and repaired as necessary.
The role may also break old concrete and handle related repairs.
- Prepare work areas, set forms, and determine the amount of concrete required.
- Monitor pouring, spread, and level concrete into sections.
- Shape surfaces, create expansion joints, and finish surfaces to specified textures.
- Break old concrete, remove debris, and repair surfaces and potholes.
- Operate a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, tamping machines, cement mixers, air compressors, jackhammers, chainsaws, and concrete saws.
- Transport, load, and unload equipment and materials for projects.
- Perform manual lifting, moving, and shoveling tasks.
- Maintain equipment by inspecting, checking fluid levels, greasing, and cleaning.
- Gather equipment, tools, materials, and supplies for job sites.
- Process forms, reports, and work orders; forward or retain as appropriate.
- Communicate via telephone and two‑way radio; relay messages and respond to service requests.
- Assume supervisory duties in the absence of the supervisor, including reviewing work and maintaining standards.
- Provide assistance and backup coverage to other employees or departments as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- At least two (2) years of experience or training involving concrete or brick work, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid Georgia Driver's License required.
- Proficiency in operating and controlling equipment, machinery, tools, and materials.
- Strong verbal and mathematical aptitude for data handling, instructions, and calculations.
- Ability to perform functional, situational, and reasonable judgment reasoning.
- Physical Ability: lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling 20–50 pounds; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling are required.
- Sensory Requirements: ability to perceive color, texture, and depth; oral communication is required.
- Environmental Factors: exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, noise, vibrations, electric currents, and hazardous materials.
