The Position

The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform manual work functions associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of city streetlights, pedestrian lighting, high mast lights, and security lights.

Duties

Performs manual work functions associated with maintenance of city street lights, pedestrian lighting, security lights, and high mast lighting systems which may include replacing street light and security light heads and bulbs, repairing/replacing hot wires, repairing cut cables, painting light poles, trimming tree limbs and bushes, digging holes or trenches, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, etc.

Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools associated with maintenance of city street lights and security lights, which may include a trencher, bucket truck, line truck, tractor, voltage ohmmeter, post hole digger, shovel, mechanic tools, etc.

Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop and work areas, etc.; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

Troubleshoots malfunctioning lights to locate circuitry problems utilizing electronic diagnostic equipment.

Maintains adequate stock of equipment, tools, supplies and materials on trucks for use at work sites; initiates request for replenishing/replacing stock.

Utilizes precautionary work methods and safety equipment to ensure safety of work crews and the public; performs safety functions such as traffic control flagging, setting up traffic cones and barricades, and following DOT regulations.

Reads and interprets electrical diagrams and maps.

May provide direction, guidance and assistance to assigned staff; organizes projects; assigns and evaluates work; provides training as needed.

Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, requisitions, and other documents to include written and hands‑on tests.

Receives various forms, reports, electrical diagrams, maps, blueprints, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, Utilities & City departments, the public, and other individuals to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Communicates via telephone and/or two‑way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.

Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.

May be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, holidays in the event of a natural disaster, power outages, downed power lines or trees, or any disruption of service to Utilities customers; during periods of severe weather, required to contact immediate supervisor for any instructions.

Additional Functions

Installs, maintains, and removes decorations and lights during holiday seasons.

May assist with utility and safety investigations to include setting up and maintaining surveillance equipment.
