Signal Technician

The purpose of this classification is to install, maintain, and repair the traffic control system for the City of Albany and Dougherty County.

• Install traffic and pedestrian signals.
• Maintain existing signal system equipment.
• Program timers/controllers for intersection signal systems.
• Repair damaged equipment.
• Design and build projects to upgrade existing computer system.
• Design and build electronic equipment.
• Build new signalized intersections.
• Redesign existing signal system as required.
• Band and tune sensor loops.
• Repair and maintain computer input/output equipment and interconnect cable between intersections and computer.
• Install and maintain fiber optic and copper communication cables on pole lines and underground.
• Design and build projects for other city departments as directed.
• Operate bucket truck, trencher, concrete saw, jack hammer, jig saw, sharp shooter, weed eater, rotor hammer, power drill, volt meters, cable puller, wire stripper, crimper, and other hand tools in the performance of duties.
• Perform inventory of parts, equipment, tools and supplies to ensure resources are available to complete assigned work; initiate requests for new or replacement materials; organize and stock service vehicles for daily work and emergency calls; transport necessary parts, equipment, tools and supplies to job sites.
• Receive, review, prepare and/or complete various forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, logs, maps, plats, drawings and manuals pertaining to signal system operation and maintenance; process, forward or maintain as appropriate.
• Communicate via telephone and/or two‑way radio; provide information; take and relay messages; respond to requests for service and/or information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals; investigate and resolve complaints as needed.
• Communicate with supervisor, employees, city/county departments, vendors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
• May instruct laborers and trainees, assign work, coordinate activities, and review work‑in‑progress.

• Answer telephones and relay messages as needed.
• Clean and maintain shop area, vehicles, and lawn.
• Perform other related duties as required.

• High School diploma or GED required; supplemented by a Vocational/Technical diploma in electronics, electrical wiring, or a related field required; additionally, one year of previous experience and/or training involving basic electrical and electronic devices required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
