Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Job Purpose
The purpose of this classification is to perform manual/mechanical work functions associated with service and maintenance of automotive and mechanical equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including pumping fuel into vehicles, checking and replacing fluid levels, draining and replacing oil, changing and replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, replacing belts and hoses, checking batteries, greasing equipment, inspecting brakes, and other maintenance tasks.
- Repair or replace tires on light and heavy equipment, motor vehicles, and other machinery, including rotating tires, balancing tires and checking air pressure level.
- Operate a variety of machinery, equipment and tools associated with repairing, maintaining and testing vehicles and equipment, such as service trucks, buses, dump trucks, tractors, forklifts, bulldozers, backhoes, end loaders, fuel trucks, generators, tire changers, computerized tire balancers, battery/charging system analyzers, transfer pumps, air wrenches, air compressors, pressure washers, hydraulic jacks, grease guns, tire hammers, gauges, mechanic tools and diagnostic instruments.
- Perform welding and metal fabrication as needed or directed.
- Test machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations and report problem situations.
- Perform general maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools and equipment operable, and report faulty equipment for repair.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of parts, equipment, tools or supplies and receive incoming parts.
- Make emergency service calls for disabled vehicles at job sites or on the road.
- Perform general cleaning and housekeeping tasks in vehicle, equipment and shop areas.
- Prepare and complete various inspection forms, correspondence, vehicle maintenance reports, work orders and other documents.
- Receive and process documents such as forms, reports, manuals and other documentation, and forward or retain them as appropriate.
- Communicate via telephone and/or two‑way radio, provide information, take and relay messages, direct calls, and return calls as necessary.
- Respond to routine requests for information or assistance from employees, the public or other individuals.
- Provide assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
- Perform other related duties as required.
High school diploma or GED required; one (1) year of related previous experience/training, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
Must obtain and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.

- Human Interaction – Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well‑established policies, procedures and standards.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Utilization – Ability to operate and control equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex or rapid adjustments.
- Verbal Aptitude – Ability to utilize a variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
- Mathematical Aptitude – Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, calculate decimals and percentages, use principles of fractions and interpret graphs.
- Functional Reasoning – Ability to apply principles of rational systems, interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form, and exercise independent judgment to modify methods and standards.
- Situational Reasoning – Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
Tasks require regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, including some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderate objects (20–50 pounds) or occasionally heavier objects (up to 100 pounds). Tasks may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, extreme temperatures, noise, machinery vibration or toxic agents.
Sensory requirements include the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture and visual cues or signals, as well as oral communication.
