Supervise the work activities and personnel of a crew engaged in the construction, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of city streets, sewer and storm water drainage systems, parks, and other public infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Direct and allocate work for assigned crew; act on employee problems, provide counseling or discipline as appropriate.
  • Train less experienced operators and crew workers; assist with employee performance appraisals.
  • Act as liaison between employees and management; compile and review time sheets.
  • Prioritize, plan, and schedule work activities to meet objectives; ensure crew have required resources.
  • Monitor status of work in progress, inspect completed work, provide progress and activity reports to management, and complete required paperwork.
  • Obtain required permits and coordinate availability of equipment, materials, tools, and supplies; maintain inventory and initiate orders for new or replacement items.
  • Operate heavy equipment (motor grader, backhoe, dump truck, roller, crack sealer, etc.) and drive vehicles on site and on public roads; supervise safe working zones and enforce safety procedures.
  • Perform manual work functions such as repairing roads/asphalt, compacting surfaces, installing/repairing pipe, constructing/repairing ditches, removing potholes, building sidewalks, cutting pipes, installing fences, mowing, trimming trees, and cleaning debris.
  • Plan and implement maintenance activities for parks, landscaping, public property, sports fields, and cemeteries; troubleshoot maintenance problems; assist in maintaining playing fields and grave sites.
  • Coordinate special events activities, assist with traffic control, litter pickup, and moving heavy furniture or materials.
  • Respond to and supervise emergency calls during inclement weather or other emergency situations.
  • Prepare and complete various forms and documentation, including work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, diagrams, maps, and manuals.
  • Communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, and the public via telephone and two‑way radio; provide information and assistance; relay messages or direct calls as appropriate.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of five years experience in construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sewer and drainage systems, or related public infrastructure.
  • Valid Georgia Class A commercial driver’s license and flagging certification.
  • Ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, and summarize data/information.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to persuade and influence in a supervisory capacity.
  • Proficiency in operating and controlling complex machinery, equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Mathematical aptitude including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, fractions, and graph interpretation.
  • Functional and situational reasoning abilities: ability to follow written or oral instructions and exercise independent judgment for decision making.

  • Provide assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work (climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects up to 50 lb).
  • Perception of colors, sounds, odors, visual cues; ability to communicate orally.
  • Exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, and traffic hazards.
