Description
The Dougherty County Public Works department is hiring on a continuous basis for a Heavy Equipment Operator I. The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment and trucks necessary for the maintenance of grounds, buildings, and roads. Responsibilities include operating backhoes, bulldozers, drag‑line cranes, loading and packing dirt, clearing land, and constructing roads. This class works under close general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
EssentialTasks
- Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, earth movers, dump trucks, motor graders, dragline cranes, front‑end loaders and/or tractors.
- Clears and prepares landscapes for forging of manholes, building new roads, pipe laying, and other construction projects.
- Constructs roads with crew members by cutting slopes, pulling ditches, laying blue top on road, clipping shoulders, and maintaining right‑of‑way.
- Mows rights‑of‑way, canals, and ditches.
- Loads and packs dirt and other heavy materials.
- Performs minor preventive maintenance and repair on equipment as necessary, and/or prepares machines for major servicing; may be responsible for repairing and maintaining crane equipment.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Performs medium work involving walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects and involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force regularly and 50 to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to bright/dim light; dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
