The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform manual work functions associated with producing/finishing concrete areas and assisting with various Public Works projects.

  • Prepare work areas for concrete surface; measure, mark, level, set grade, and remove debris.
  • Set up forms for concrete area; determine the amount of concrete required for the project.
  • Monitor pouring of cement into forms; spread, shake, level, and shape the poured concrete into sections; mold expansion joints.
  • Finish surfaces of poured concrete to specified textures; remove rough or defective spots and patch holes.
  • Break old concrete surfaces, remove materials, repair concrete surfaces and potholes.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and tools (dump truck, front‑end loader, backhoe, tamping machine, cement mixer, air compressor, jackhammer, chainsaw, concrete saw, sledgehammer, mallet, shovel, rake, axe, mechanic tools, concrete tools, concrete forms, etc.).
  • Transport, load, and unload various equipment and materials used in projects.
  • Perform manual work functions associated with department projects (lifting/moving heavy materials, shoveling, picking up debris/litter, placing signage, etc.).
  • Maintain machinery and equipment by inspecting, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing, washing/cleaning, and ensuring operational efficiency and safety; report faulty equipment.
  • Gather appropriate equipment, tools, materials, and supplies for use at work sites; initiate requests for additional materials; transport materials to job sites.
  • Receive, prepare, and/or complete various forms, reports, work orders, maps, or other documentation; process and forward or retain as appropriate.
  • Communicate via telephone and/or two‑way radio; provide information, take and relay messages, and respond to requests for service and information from employees, officials, the public, or other individuals.
Additional Functions
  • May perform the duties of supervisor in absence of same, which may include supervising, reviewing work, and maintaining standards; provide assistance and/or backup coverage to other employees or departments as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; additionally, two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving concrete or brick work, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.

Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20–50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require perceiving and discriminating color or shade, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals; some tasks require oral communication.

Environmental Factors:
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature extremes, noise, machinery vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
