Mechanic
The Mechanic will provide efficient, economical vehicle service and repairs ensuring the safe, efficient operating conditions of all school system vehicles and equipment.
Qualifications:
Vocational diploma in Automotive or related field;
Minimum of two (2) years of work experience as a mechanic;
In-depth knowledge of vehicle diagnostic equipment and mechanical systems;
Must possess or attain and maintain a valid Georgia commercial driver's license with a "P" and "S" endorsement within 90 days of the hire date;
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.
Skills and Abilities:
Ability to apply critical thinking skills and recommendations in rendering solutions to various issues;
Ability to maintain equipment records;
Positive job attitude and the ability to work with others;
Must have excellent organizational skills;
Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Performance Responsibilities:
Inspects, diagnoses maintain, overhauls, and repairs automobiles, trucks, tractors, buses, and other related equipment;
Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on power trains, brakes, steering, electrical, cooling, and related systems;
Performs complete overhaul on gasoline and diesel engines, major and minor engine efficiency improvements;
Diagnoses motor knocks, noise, or mechanical failures through both road testing and the use of diagnostic equipment;
Replaces or repairs universal joints, axles, transmissions, and clutches as required;
Replaces tie rods, steering sectors, spring, and shock absorbers;
Replaces or rebuilds generators, alternators, regulators, starters, wiring, and gauges;
Maintains and repairs environmental apparatus installed on automotive equipment;
Makes emergency road calls to perform minor repairs on equipment or tow disabled equipment to the garage;
Performs light welding and machine work incidental to the completion of repair assignments;
Changes and repairs tires when necessary;
Maintains accurate, up-to-date records associated with all maintenance activities;
Assists in general housekeeping of the repair areas and related facilities;
Assists in the implementation of standard safety procedures;
Repairs and maintains other shop equipment as necessary;
Maintains and repairs school bus upholstery;
Performs other such duties as needed or assigned by the supervisor.
