This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. Within one year of permanent appointment, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination.
Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Minimum Qualifications
Note: This position may be filled as a two-year traineeship. Advanced Placement in a traineeship is at the discretion of the hiring agency.
- Starting salary for Accountant Aide Trainee 1 $40,720
- Starting salary for Accountant Aide Trainee 2 $45,494
- Starting salary for Accountant Aide Journey-Level $50,844
- Six credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and one year of experience gathering, preparing and updating financial data, financial reports, and records; or reconciling accounts and data, reviewing accounting and auditing reports, and verifying accuracy of calculations, balances, and supporting documentation; or assisting accountants or auditors conducting financial and program audits by counting, verifying, and reconciling inventory and cash on hand, determining and verifying the accuracy and propriety of transactions, records, reports, and statements.
Aide Trainee 2
- Nine credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and 18 months of experience gathering, preparing and updating financial data, financial reports, and records; or reconciling accounts and data, reviewing accounting and auditing reports, and verifying accuracy of calculations, balances, and supporting documentation; or assisting accountants or auditors conducting financial and program audits by counting, verifying, and reconciling inventory and cash on hand, determining and verifying the accuracy and propriety of transactions, records, reports, and statements.
- Twelve semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and two years of gathering, preparing, and updating financial data, financial reports, and records; or reconciling accounts and data, reviewing accounting and auditing reports, and verifying accuracy of calculations, balances, and supporting documentation; or assisting accountants or auditors conducting financial and program audits by counting, verifying, and reconciling inventory and cash on hand, determining and verifying the accuracy and propriety of transactions, records, reports, and statements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Eligible for transfer under Civil Service Law or reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title and location in accordance with the provisions of Civil Service Law, Rules and Regulations.
- 55B/C: You must have a valid letter of eligibility from the Department of Civil Service dated within the last three (3) years and you must meet the non-competitive minimum qualifications listed above. You must include your letter with your application.
This position is on the accounting team in the Registrations, Accounting and Support Bureau. Accountant Aide Job Functions may include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and maintain a basic understanding of accounting principles, theories, and techniques.
- Post daily bank statements and recap reports for daily revenue reports.
- Post daily Empire and Mainframe distribution reports to Tax Ledgers.
- Assist the Senior Accountant with preparing monthly spreadsheets.
- Assist the Senior Accountant with reconciling variances and follow up with the bank, Department staff, or OSC as required.
- Assist the Senior Accountant with quarterly and annual GAAP reports.
- Prepare various Accounting financial reports and respond to ad hoc requests.
- Possess strong computer skills to navigate various PC systems including email, spreadsheets, databases, DTF systems and bank websites on the internet to report on daily and monthly revenues.
- Possess strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Adhere to the Department's time and attendance rules and regulations.
