The Junior Accountant for the Energy Office will work with the Senior Energy Account and will be responsible for vendor payments, computing campus allocations, maintaining and updating data promptly, reconciling accounts and other financial documents for the Energy Buying Group (EBG). This position will require a broad understanding of basic accounting principles with emphasis on cost accounting, excellent communication skills, and an in-depth knowledge of Excel functions.
This position also requires an understanding of the Clean Energy Standards and its clean energy programs.
Job Responsibilities:
Accounting:
- Process invoice payments promptly using the SUNY Finance & Management System (FMS) for New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), and all other vendors associated with EBG.
- Maintain accurate breakdown of expenditures for participating campuses using EnergyCAP automation software.
- Process journal transactions to distribute expenses by campus and account type.
- Process redistribution of costs from NYISO invoices to participating campuses.
- Prepare monthly invoices for Community Colleges to recover SUNY costs and track payments.
- Update account reconciliation for distributed costs by Meter, by Campus, State, DIFR, IFR accounts for publication on website.
- Prepare Monthly Savings Statistics showing EBG program costs versus the utility's supply costs.
- Prepare and maintain a monthly folder including standard vouchers, expense backup spreadsheets, journal transfer expenditures, and yearly encumbrances.
- Maintain accounting and recordkeeping for all SUNY EBG program costs in accordance with NYS and GAAP procedures.
- Meet accounting deadlines.
- Use EnergyCAP for processing data entry and computations specifically as it pertains to the EBG.
- Enter monthly utility bills into EnergyCAP software.
- Analyze campus data for accuracy through reporting features.
- Assist campuses with questions and changes to their campus data.
- Work with EnergyCAP users to understand software capability as well as new features.
- Develop analysis and reporting graphs for distribution to Campus and System Administration personnel.
- Maintain familiarity with electricity regulatory processes.
- Maintain familiarity with NYS Executive Orders and potential impact on EBG.
- Maintain a knowledge of the Clean Energy Standard and its programs managed by NYSERDA.
- Coordinate with the University Controllers Office to ensure program participants have adequate encumbered funds to pay expenses.
- Reconcile State, DIFR, IFR accounts for accuracy between the account reconciliation and SUNY FMS.
- Assist with EBG budget preparation by producing accurate data.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in business, accounting or related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in detailed accounting functions.
- Experience using Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to develop accounting workflows for intricate financial processes.
- Ability to understand multi-set processes between multiple agencies.
- Experience with SUNY Finance & Management System.
- Familiarity with the electricity market.
- Familiarity with EnergyCAP software or a related energy management software.
- Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The range for this position is $60,000-$70,000 annually.
- The anticipated start date for this position is on or after August 1, 2026.
