Duties Description

Since 2012, the New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) has been providing free services to immigrants through a network of trusted community-based organizations that deliver multilingual culturally responsive programming. These services center around the following areas:
Citizenship and Civic Engagement, Developmental Disability Services, English Language Learning, Immigration Legal Services, Mental Health Support and Workforce Development.

Duties Description

Since 2012, the New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) has been providing free services to immigrants through a network of trusted community-based organizations that deliver multilingual culturally responsive programming. These services center around the following areas:
Citizenship and Civic Engagement, Developmental Disability Services, English Language Learning, Immigration Legal Services, Mental Health Support and Workforce Development.

Intern will have one of the two following assignments.

Option
1) ONA Seeks a Student Assistant To Assist The Senior Manager For Program Evaluation-Lead Coordinator For The Office For New Americans (ONA) Ramirez June Initiative In Supporting Immigrants With Disabilities And In The Evaluation Of ONA Programming Through The Following Duties:

  • Update the ONA program database and assist in the creation of a data dashboard.
  • Assist in the statistical analysis of ONA program data and create charts and data visualizations to present program outputs and outcomes.
  • Develop informational material and assist in facilitating training on program evaluation frameworks and logic models to ONA staff and ONA grantee staff.
  • Develop a Referral Resource to assist ONA staff in referring constituents to disability resources.
  • Develop a train-the-trainer to assist ONA outreach staff to share about available disability resources with new American communities using the resources from the ONA Disability Resources Toolkit: A Guide to Disability Services in New York State.
  • Update and assist in the distribution of ONA Ramirez June Initiative resources, as needed.
  • Assist in administrative tasks including scheduling meetings and taking notes as needed.
  • Assist with other ONA tasks, as needed.

Option
2) ONA Seeks a Student Assistant To Support Its Policy Unit With Policy, Data And Research Around Immigration And Immigrant Integration. The Duties Of The Student Assistant Will Include:

  • Drafting plain language one-pagers that highlight immigrant data around the following topics:
  • business ownership or entrepreneurship
  • workforce development
  • participation in specific industries, like health care
  • educational attainment of new Americans
  • Performing research and drafting informational policy one-pagers on topics impacting immigrants including, but not limited to, youth mental health, public charge, business ownership and workforce development.
  • Supporting the development of demographic New York State regional immigrant data sheets.
  • Compiling brief weekly synopsis of immigrant policy news.
  • Participating in meetings with immigrant serving community-based organizations and think tanks.
  • Organizing files, scheduling meetings, performing observations and note-taking.
  • Other tasks to support the New York State Office for New Americans upon request.
Minimum Qualifications

Candidate must be a matriculated part time or full time undergraduate or graduate student at an education institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. Documentation of current matriculation and enrollment must be submitted with your resume, along with a writing sample.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Interest in working with diverse cultures, particularly immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong skills with Microsoft products, specifically Excel and Word.
  • Graduate Student
  • Degree in Counseling, Cultural Studies, Health Services, Psychology/Psychiatry, Public Administrations, Public Health, Social Science, or Social Work.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel includes
  • experience cleaning, organizing, and managing datasets.
  • Ability to present findings clearly through charts and other data visualizations.
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis and experience working with coding, thematic analysis or content analysis.
