Dental caries (cavities) is the most common disease of childhood. Oral health is often overlooked for its importance to health - poor oral health is linked to heart disease. It is often overlooked for its impact on school/academic achievement - poor oral health leads to school absences and disruptions. Based on national survey data, it is estimated that over 600,000 children under the age of 18 did not receive dental care in the past 12 months, and only about 40% of children in Medicaid received preventive dental care in the past 12 months.
Dental deserts, where there are not enough dentists to treat the number of people in need, are prevalent in NYS, which makes it difficult to meet the needs of children.
