Overview
The Director of the Schaffer Library of Health Sciences collaborates with faculty, students, researchers, clinicians, and other constituencies of the academic medical center to understand information needs and ensure the library effectively supports all the missions – education, research, clinical practice, and community service – of the Albany Med Health System.
Responsibilities- Oversee all aspects of library operations, including staffing, services, technologies, strategic planning and policy.
- Supervise library staff; oversee hiring, training, and performance management.
- Prepare and monitor budgets for multiple library and audiovisual cost centers; work with System leadership to assure fiscal compliance and strategic alliance.
- Oversee collection development including physical and digital resources, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the institution.
- Partner with appropriate stakeholders to oversee library facilities and space planning.
- Provide leadership in developing and delivering high-quality library services, including reference, instruction, and research support; integrate information skills into the system academic and clinical environments.
- Stay informed about emerging information, education and instructional technologies and trends in academic health sciences libraries; incorporate them into library services and operations.
- Develop and implement the library's operational and strategic plan, aligning it with the institution's overall goals.
- Participate in library fundraising activities and explore grant opportunities to support library initiatives.
- Work closely with the Information Services Department to ensure access to, and effective use of, information resources and tools.
- Plan for technology infrastructure, implementation and upgrades, ensuring compatibility and compliance.
- Regularly assess the library's effectiveness in meeting the needs of the institution, using data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Lead initiatives that support scholarly publishing and open science access across academic, research, and clinical enterprises.
- Support team building and active learning among library staff.
- Chair the College Information Technology Advisory Committee.
- Support the LCME and MSCHE accreditation processes.
- Support the educational offerings of the library, including library faculty who are actively engaged in the educational mission through course directorships, teaching, and scholarship.
- Engage in strategic planning for integration of library services into health system initiatives, such as informatics, patient education, clinical decision support, and community-based research.
This role may require access to information considered sensitive to Albany Medical Center, its patients, affiliates, and partners, including but not limited to HIPAA Protected Health Information and other information regulated by Federal and New York State statutes. Workforce members are expected to ensure that: access to information is based on a “need to know” and is the minimum necessary to properly perform assigned duties.
