Position: Academic Advisor - Academic Support Center
Location: City of Albany

Job Description

The University at Albany has implemented a campus‑wide student success model aligning current advising structures, strengthening campus coordination and collaboration, and providing holistic and personalized support for students from admission to graduation. In furtherance of this mission, the Academic Support Center at the University at Albany is seeking innovative and student‑centered academic advisors to support the university’s student success model.

University advisors are responsible for providing academic advisement to approximately 300 undergraduate students throughout their academic careers. This student‑oriented position works closely with students to develop individual success strategies, while collaborating with campus colleagues to identify potential academic roadblocks and engage in proactive problem‑solving to address those issues.

The successful candidates must be familiar with developmental and pro‑active advising models, have a commitment to student‑centered advisement, and be comfortable using information technology to assist in advisement. This is a calendar‑year position and participation is required in all summer orientation sessions.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as a primary advisor for a cohort of students from admission to graduation.
  • Monitor academic progress and communicate with students about university requirements.
  • When a student changes majors, work with the university advisor to discuss the change, review new degree requirements and evaluate the impact on academic standing and trajectory.
  • Coordinate the student’s success team and proactively initiate intervention strategies when additional support or referral is needed.
  • Provide targeted and strategic interventions based on a unique understanding of each student.
  • Approach each student recognizing their complex set of issues and concerns that shape their academic pathway.
  • Connect with students regularly to build rapport and serve as the first point of contact to ensure questions are answered and concerns resolved.
  • Collaborate with the advising team, faculty and other university departments to enhance student success and coordinate support services.
  • Remain current on best practices in advising student success and provide support to the university community as appropriate.
  • Perform other reasonable duties as assigned.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Reports to an Assistant Director within the Academic Support Center.
  • Supervises: N/A.
  • May supervise employees as assigned if no direct reports at the time of filling the position.
Job Requirements
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within a diverse campus community.
  • Demonstrated ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging in the role.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • One year of professional experience or relevant graduate‑level employment with a college student population.
  • Experience providing academic and personal advisement or case management and outreach to support students in meeting educational or career goals, specifically with students in transition or on academic probation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of professional academic advising experience.
  • Master’s degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Experience working with special populations including pre‑health, international, transfer and/or historically excluded populations of students.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or another non‑English language (preferred).
Working Environment
  • Typical office environment.

    Academic Advisor, SL3, $57,151.
