The following list of duties is a highlight of the most important aspects of the role of an Attendance Teacher. Attendance Teachers are under the direction of the Pupil Personnel Department and are overseen by the Pupil Personnel Assistant Director and directly supervised by the Building Principal. The Attendance Teachers are assigned to individual schools and supervise, reinforce, and review the attendance processes, procedures, protocols, and policies of the district with each building principal and those designated as the school's Attendance Committee.
Responsibilities:Investigate Failed to Enter (FTE) students and students who leave the district without verification or record requests. Institute district procedures for follow up and identification of students who leave the district without verification.
Works with school district staff to track down potential dropouts, referring to outside programs such as GED, as necessary
Assess and conduct all due diligence to determine when a student may be disenrolled or moved into the District Shell
Prepare for weekly/monthly NYS mandated school Attendance Committee/MTSS meetings. Review data and reports as the primary method of identifying trends, make recommendations for follow-up action, review building attendance processes and procedures.
Investigate allegations of truancy or chronic absenteeism through Attendance Committee/MTSS recommendations or staff/administrator requests.
Provide guidance/system's approach and support on how to address barriers to attendance.
Have meetings and conversations with students and/or families to discuss the attendance concern and to assess barriers for improvement.
Implement Attendance Contracts or other progress monitoring methods
Assist attendance/guidance office with maintaining accuracy of student attendance records via appropriate coding and documentation.
Involvement in the development, planning, and implementation of attendance initiatives.
May assist with the preparation of attendance letter, mailing, and returned mail.
Manage the tracking of accurate address of students and address verifications address updates per district requirements. Follow-up with all questionable residency situations.
Prepare tuition letters for students who have not enrolled into their district of residence via PPS approval.
Have on-going communication and contact, including home visits with parents/guardians and especially those who respond to letters or who need further intervention.
Make Child Protective Services reports for Educational/Medical Neglect and complete all required documentation and follow-up with investigatory agents.
Utilize district resources (HSC/Nurse/SRO/administration) to assist with home visits and investigation of cases of truancy or chronic absenteeism.
Meet at least monthly to provide details to PPS regarding individual school attendance trends and investigations/intervention efforts.
Coordinate with the district's homeless liaison regarding students whose attendance is adversely affected by housing issues.
