Assistant Professor Bioethics And Healthcare Policy
The Alden March Bioethics Institute (AMBI) at Albany Medical College, Albany, New York, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the level of assistant professor. Candidates should have a specialization in bioethics and healthcare policy. Successful candidates will be expected to engage in conceptual or empirical research in bioethics and healthcare policy, to teach two graduate courses in bioethics and policy, to participate in the teaching of the ethics curriculum of Albany Medical College, and to serve as a clinical ethics consultant for the Albany Medical System.
We welcome applicants with a terminal degree from a wide range of disciplines including but not limited to philosophy, health policy, law, anthropology, sociology, medicine, and nursing. Applications submitted before or on 10/15/26 will receive full consideration.
The start date can be negotiated, but the candidate is expected to start between January 2027 and July 2027. Prior experience with clinical ethics consultation is not required for this position, but a successful candidate will be required to undergo training in clinical ethics consultation during the first year in the faculty position.
AMBI was established in 1993 and is an internationally recognized bioethics research institute based within Albany Medical College. AMBI is a multidisciplinary center and includes faculty with backgrounds in philosophy, medical anthropology, religious ethics, social work, law, medicine, and nursing. AMBI also has collaborative partnerships with several colleges in the New York State area, including dual degree programs with Albany Law School and Albany Medical College.
In addition to its graduate program in bioethics, AMBI oversees a 4-year ethics curriculum for medical students within Albany Medical College and provides clinical ethics consultation for Albany Medical Center, a 766-bed hospital and northeastern New York's only academic medical center.
- Responsibilities for this position include:
- Publishing conceptual or empirical scholarly works;
- Teaching in the four-year ethics curriculum of the Albany Medical College;
- Teaching and designing ethics courses for AMBI's online graduate bioethics program;
- Providing clinical ethics consultation for the Albany Medical System; and,
- Mentoring graduate students, medical students, and clinical ethics fellows.
