Environmental Engineer, Civil Engineering

Duties Description
- Assist in performing environmental engineering duties including designing water/wastewater treatment systems, distribution systems, onsite disposal systems, etc.
- Assist in preparing reports relating to water/wastewater and other environmental engineering systems, including recommendations for changes in design, construction or operational procedures and practices.
- Prepare environmental drawings and details, specifications, estimates, and/or studies for design projects under the direction of licensed staff.
- Coordinate design drawings and related specifications, construction costs estimates, etc., with the other disciplines.
- Assist in scheduling assigned projects according to workload, priorities, and design schedules.
- Assist in the review of reports, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates prepared by design consultants.
- Assist with the supervision of consultant design work.
- Develop and maintain project documentation, including records of meetings, correspondence, and progress.
- Collaborate with senior designers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure project goals are met.
- Review shop drawings, respond to contractor Requests for Information, create and/or review Information Bulletins, and provide similar construction administration and observation during the project’s construction.
- Assist with supervision of junior staff.
- Additional duties as assigned.
- Travel may be required (approximately 20%).
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required.
Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher as listed below; OR proof of passing the NCEES FE AND one year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.
Qualifying degrees:
Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Design Engineering, Environmental Resources Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering, Forest Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Paper Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Soil and Water Resources Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.
Qualifying experience:
One year of full‑time experience in sanitary, public health or environmental engineering.
This title includes a traineeship opportunity, and applicants must meet one of the following: A bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology (listed above).
OR proof of passing the NCEES FE and one year of full‑time engineering experience (listed above).
OR current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to a Grade 18 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
