Assistant Engineer; Civil​/Structural; NY HELPS - VID

Duties Description

• Assist in performing structural engineering duties related to the preparation of structural steel or reinforced concrete designs for new construction of State facilities and rehabilitation/repair of State facilities.
• Prepare structural drawings and details, specifications, estimates, and/or studies for design projects under the direction of licensed staff.
• Coordinate design drawings and related specifications, construction cost estimates, etc., with other disciplines.
• Assist in scheduling assigned projects according to workload, priorities, and design schedules.
• Assist in the review of reports, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates prepared by design consultants.
• Assist with the supervision of consultant design work.
• Develop and maintain project documentation, including records of meetings, correspondence, and progress.
• Collaborate with senior designers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure project goals are met.
• Assist in review of submittals, respond to contractor Requests for Information, create and/or review Information Bulletins, and provide construction administration and observation during the construction phase.
• Assist with supervision of junior staff.
• Additional duties as assigned.

• Travel may be required (approximately 20%).
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is required.

Positions at the Assistant level (not trainee) in Albany receive a geographic pay differential added to the hiring salary of $7,000. Employees new to the Office of General Services Design and Construction are generally restricted from telecommuting for at least eight calendar weeks. After the initial restriction, if duties and performance align with telecommuting, employees may be allowed to telecommute up to four days per pay period upon approval.

• Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the following:
  Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration.
• Or proof of passing the NCEES FE and one year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience in analysis and design of steel framing, concrete framing, concrete foundations, and seismic design.
• Or a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to Grade 18 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
• Resumes must include month and year for start and end dates of experience; if experience is less than full time, indicate the average number of hours worked per week.
