Job Purpose
As a Safety Specialist within T&D Electric Ops, Safety, Culture and Development team, you will support Major Projects Contractor Safety by strengthening the company’s overall safety culture and ensuring compliance. You will monitor National Grid’s safety programs for the contracted workforce handling Climate Leadership and Climate Protection Act (CLCPA) projects, working closely with field personnel to develop positive professional relationships with all levels of management and contractors throughout all phases of Major Projects.
This field position involves worksites across the Eastern, Western, and Central divisions and requires weekly travel to work sites, supporting our electric and operational support businesses and the delivery of New York State’s clean energy goals.
- Develop positive, professional relationships with contractors, internal field personnel, and leadership to ensure cross collaboration.
- Monitor contractor compliance with N-1402 Contractor Safety Requirements, including worker qualifications, onboarding, PPE usage, OSHA, and FMCSA requirements.
- Understand project scopes and workplans to gauge safety-related risks and hazards and prioritize field visits accordingly.
- Act as a subject matter expert for all projects pre-job review, walk-through, and planning, supporting construction supervisors.
- Participate or lead Risk Assessment and Job Hazard Analysis.
- Review contractor Health and Safety Plans and suggest improvements before project kickoff.
- Participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and Incident Analyses (IA) with NY Electric Transmission, Substation, Distribution Line, Civil Construction, and NY Major Projects.
- Investigate incidents, injuries, property damage, and other safety concerns, reviewing contractor incident investigations.
- Communicate safety and health information at employee and contractor meetings.
- Monitor contractor safety performance, KPIs, and metrics associated with each project.
- Provide backup for other Safety Specialists on vacation or leave, or when onsite safety presence is required.
- Minimum five years’ experience in constructing, maintaining, and repairing electrical distribution and transmission systems above or below ground, and knowledge of electrical operating procedures and environmental policies.
- Minimum five years of progressive safety oversight preferred.
- Basic knowledge of applicable equipment, standards, and practices for Transmission and Substation construction work.
- Knowledge of FAA regulations preferred.
- Knowledge of all relevant OSHA regulations required.
- CSP certification preferred or willingness to obtain certification.
- Excellent public speaking, training, and presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills.
- Critical thinking skills to make decisions quickly with limited information and guidance.
- Strong organization and communication skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to compile and analyze project data to monitor performance, recognize trends, and identify process improvement opportunities.
- Ability to reference, understand, apply, and adhere to contract documents.
- Self-starter with strong work ethic, desire to learn and develop, and ability to maintain a daily/weekly schedule.
- Computer and technology proficiency.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
$108,000 - $127,000 per year
