Position: Environmental Permitting Specialists (Field Based)
Location: City of Albany

Environmental Permitting Specialist

ERM is hiring Environmental Permitting Specialists to support key client operations in either Albany, Syracuse or Buffalo, NY. The role holders will be responsible for managing environmental licensing and permitting activities for electric and gas projects to ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal environmental requirements. This is a full‑time (40 hours per week) limited‑term role with a duration of one year, extendable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review electric, gas and facility capital improvement projects and facility modifications to evaluate potential impacts on the environment and the need for regulatory permits and/or authorizations
  • Oversee clients’ field operations, including the management and documentation of site visits, to monitor and facilitate compliance with applicable local, state, federal and company requirements
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge regarding current and proposed federal, state and local regulations and clients’ Environmental Procedures to ensure client compliance with environmental legislation and regulations
  • Train and motivate engineering and corporate‑based personnel to comply with all applicable federal, state and local environmental regulations and clients’ Environmental Procedures; provide technical guidance, support and coaching to share knowledge and develop technical understanding of environmental requirements
  • Successfully manage permitting within project schedules
  • Review and manage environmental aspects of projects during design and construction
Successful Candidates Will
  • Effectively communicate with peers and regulators
  • Work independently, manage priorities and organize workloads with moderate guidance
  • Build strong working relationships with Operations, Engineering, Project Management, Construction, Legal, Real Estate, Safety and other personnel to share best practice and communicate business decisions
  • Manage high work volumes and apply sound problem‑solving skills to obtain, research and analyze data; draw inferences and make recommendations to client personnel and service providers
Minimum Requirements
  • ABachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental/civil engineering or related field
  • A minimum of 3–5 years of experience in permitting, preferably related to electric and/or gas utility projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental licensing and permitting regulatory requirements
  • Project management experience
  • Familiarity with GIS
Pay Transparency

For the Environmental Permitting Specialists position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $81,710 – $108,285, $39.28/hr – $52.06/hr USD/CAD, limited‑term, non‑exempt. An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue‑based metrics, and business or organizational needs.

We also may have instances where employees fall outside of the range based on the factors noted above. This job may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/Flexforce employees are NOT bonus eligible).

Benefits eligibility is limited to Regular employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week. Fixed‑Term employees (including Flexforce) who are regularly scheduled to work 20 hours a week or more are eligible for a limited benefits package.
