Design Project Assistant Role

Position for the Reimagine I-787 project, reporting directly to the Project Coordinator in charge of the Environmental Impact Study (EIS).

• Manage, supervise, train, and lead assigned design units and staff throughout all stages of the project development process. Ensure compliance with Department policies, procedures, and guidelines. Communicate goals and objectives. Assist with development and review of project designs.
• Proactively coordinate and communicate within the Department and with outside agencies, local officials, contractors, consultants, utilities, the public, and other involved parties in conformance with Department policy to advance agency goals.
• Assist the Design Project Coordinator in managing the design needs of the project with an emphasis on scope, schedule, quality, and procedural compliance to produce an EIS and Detail Design documents for an eventual construction project or projects.
• Manage the preparation of project reports, plans, specifications and estimates by design staff and consultant staff. Ensure projects are developed according to applicable design quality standards and environmental processes and regulations. Ensure proper coordination with project stakeholders.
• Coordinate and communicate with outside agencies, local officials, consultants, utility owners, the public, and other involved parties in conformance with Department policy to advance agency goals.
• Provide technical support for the project. Coordinate with consultant staff, regional staff, and Main Office bureaus as necessary to arrive at timely, cost effective, and sound engineering solutions.
• Provide direction and leadership to subordinate staff in carrying out their duties in accordance with Department policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• Manage NYSDOT staff, design consultant, quality assurance consultant, and other resources such as ensuring adequate project staffing; consultant funding, overtime use, and travel expenditures.
• May serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

• A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration, and a qualifying bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the listed engineering disciplines.
• OR one year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.
• Must be a New York State resident and authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis.

The starting salary is $98,298, comprising a base salary of $91,298 plus a $7,000 geographic pay differential. The maximum compensation is $122,252, comprising a base of $115,252 plus a $7,000 geographic pay differential. Additional adjustments may apply depending on location.
