The specific duties assigned to this position may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Perform traffic signal studies in compliance with applicable standards, laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; determine any changes to traffic control devices to address the outcome of the traffic studies, ensuring compliance with federal and state standards on traffic control devices. These include, but are not limited to, signal warrant, geometric/phasing modification, and/or operational changes.
- Coordinate with Regional Designers, Planners, and Operational staff in development of scope and plans for capital projects. This includes completing design review of traffic control devices (including signs, signals, and pavement markings) as part of the Capital Program as well as highway work permit/local project tasks such as traffic impact statements, studies, and plan submissions to comply with NYSDOT standards.
- Manage traffic control device maintenance work orders and record plans under requirements contract and coordinate with regional Planning, Design, Construction and Maintenance partners as well as local stakeholders. Manage implementation of regional TSM&O goals including but not limited to Non-Intrusive Detection devices and other intelligent transportation systems.
- Manage Advanced Traffic Management System and asset management database to provide accurate inventory of all regional traffic control devices (1000+ devices).
- Perform various professional engineering duties related to all types of traffic engineering and mobility; transportation systems management and operations, and safety evaluation and development based on operational need and as determined by the Regional Traffic Engineer.
- Supervise up to two junior technical staff (Assistant Engineer, Senior Engineering Technician, or Principal Engineering Technician) and traffic signal maintenance staff (Traffic System Technician 2 or Construction Specialist
1).
At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is required or the ability to meet the travel requirements of the position must otherwise be demonstrated.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
Either 1. A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration and a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below;
Or 2. a New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration and one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.
Qualifying degrees:
Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Design Engineering, Environmental Resources Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering, Forest Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.
Qualifying experience:
One year of full-time engineering experience in the design and construction of parks, roads, bridges, recreational facilities, water and/or wastewater treatment facilities.
